Light Up a Life Project was founded by a mother-daughter team after spending months traveling through Africa and coming into contact with remote communities in desperate need. Samantha Kirshon and her mother, Carol Kirshon, of Houston, TX decided to form Light Up a Life Project, whose mission is to provide basic educational necessities and life skills to vulnerable children in impoverished, remote areas of Africa. A native South African, Carol travels the world capturing the true essence and spirit of humanity through her photography. Often sharing these experiences with her daughter, Samantha, she lives weeks on end, interacting with humble cultures in isolated regions. In January of 2010, Samantha did an independent study and spent time attending a school in Johannesburg, South Africa. While there, she volunteered in orphanages and visited children in the impoverished, informal settlements of the Cape. She encouraged education and literacy by reading to the children and committing to fill an empty library and supplying a school with textbooks. Samantha plans to return to Africa in the future to work with teenage girls in these remote communities on nutrition, hygiene, birth control and personal care.

Together, Carol and Samantha are committed to making Light Up a Life Project a success by reaching every goal they set out to achieve. Their passion was sparked by their love of Africa, Carol's native land, and the people who inhabit it. Light Up a Life Project is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children through education and health care initiative.
